SIA Gold Medal 2001
Ar. Liu Thai Ker
Ar. Liu Thai Ker is recognised for enhancing the prestige of the architectural profession, dedication to architectural education, and a role model for younger architects.
Dr. Liu spent 24 years in public service, serving as the chief architect and chief executive of the Housing Development Board, as well as chief planner and chief executive of the Urban Redevelopment Authority. He made adjustments to the URA Concept Plans that included formulating a methodology to prepare Development Guide Plans’ clarifying regulations, speeding up the approval process and consolidating the conservation guidelines and gazetted building list.
An equally dedicated commitment to education is evident through Dr. Liu’s long involvement with the NUS School of Architecture. He served on the Advisory Committee of the School between 1981 and 2000, and the now-restructured School of Design and Environment. He has played a key role in the curriculum development for architectural education in Singapore.
Dr. Liu is as well known for his involvement with and contribution to the arts as he is an architect, having served in advisory roles with the National Heritage Board and the National Arts Council.
