Mr. Tan Cheng Siong
A Fellow (Life) of SIA, Mr. Tan Cheng Siong played an active role in SIA in the 1980s. During this period, he held different positions including Vice President, Chairman of SIA Constitution Committee, Council Member, and was appointed to lead teams to prepare the two DGPs commissioned by MND in 1991/1992 and 1997.
He designed Singapore’s first super high-rise housing, the iconic Pearl Bank Apartments, as well as the first condominium, Pandan Valley. His practice has put together diverse and groundbreaking concepts in condominium design. Serving as an Advisory Member to the Planning Committee of Shenzhen since 1986; he had been instrumental in introducing the concept of condominium housing to China in the mid-90s and continues to design pioneering landmarks in many cities in China. For his contributions in China, he was honoured with the title, “Father of Luxury Housing”.
Mr. Tan was an External Tutor, then an Adjunct Professor and External Examiner to the School of Design & Environment, Dept. of Architecture - National University of Singapore. He has shared his knowledge and rich experience through many lectures, talks and papers on topics related to urban planning, architecture and the building industry.
Besides receiving the sixth SIA Gold Medal, Mr. Tan Cheng Siong was also awarded the President’s Design Award in 2012.
He served as a Vice President of SIA from 1984 to 1986, Chairman of SIA Constitution Committee from 1982 to 1984 and a Council Member from 1982 to 1985.
